Text Box: SEWERAGE SYSTEM

The sewage and waste water collected by the sewers around Port Moresby is channelled to one of two main areas:

1. The sewage from the inland areas of Port Moresby (Boroko, Waigani, Gerehu etc) flows to the north of the city where it is treated in one of the three lagoons namely Morata Lagoon, Waigani Lagoon and Gerehu Lagoon. These are very effective ponds where the sewage can settle and be broken down by natural bacteriological processes.

2. The sewage collected from the coastal areas is generally pumped via one of the many sewage pumping stations to the head of a long sea outfall. Here the sewage is screened to remove any solids before it is pumped out to sea. The effluent enters the sea away from the coastal shore where it can be broken down by the action of the tides and the natural organisms present in seawater.

The proposed Sewerage Upgrading Project, still at its feasibility stage, is aimed to collected sewage effluents from the coastal areas for secondary treatment and disposal.
