Text Box: SEWERAGE UPGRADING PROJECT

At present, there exists no sewage treatment plant (STP) in the coastal area, hence, untreated sewage is directly discharged into the ocean causing pollution of coastal water and deterioration of living environment.

In 1998, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) carried out “The Study of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea”, and the Study concluded that construction of sewerage facilities including treatment plants, pumping stations, trunk sewers and ocean outfall pipes would be needed to improve the environmental situation.

However, because of the change in the socio-economic conditions in PNG, a review of the Feasibility Study was required. Hence, the Feasibility Study for Sewerage System Development in Port Moresby (The Study) was granted by Japanese Trade Organization in August 2002 and Itochu Corporation were appointed for the project.

Further review to support “effective implementation” was necessary hence, the Special Assistance for Project Formulation (SAPROF) study.

The SAPROF study is near completion with actual project implementation expected to commence mid next year.
