Since Eda Ranu took control of the water supply 6 years ago, it had continually maintained a water supply that complied with the World Health Organizations Drinking Water Guidelines and the PNG Drinking Water Quality Standards set by Department of Health.. Drinking water at Mt Eriama Treatment Plant is treated to world-class standards. Monitoring Programme Eda Ranu carries out one of the most comprehensive and efficient quality control program in the city in ensuring the quality of water supplied to consumers is safe at all times. The monitoring and testing programmes cover; Treated water The Source water, (Laloki river, Rouna head pond) Mt Eriama Water Treatment Plant (Treated and Settled water) Treated Water To ensure that the treated water is of a good quality and that drinking water guidelines are met, water quality testing and monitoring takes place at every stage in the distribution system. Treated water samples are collected and tested on a daily basis from front of taps covering; City points City Locations Reservoir Tanks Laboratory Analysis. Water samples are collected by qualified water quality staff using aseptic techniques and sent to accredited laboratories for further analysis. The Central Public Health Laboratory at Port Moresby General Hospital undertakes bacteriological analysis for water samples while the National Agricultural Research Institute laboratory at Kilakila carries out chemical analysis for the water samples. In addition, Eda Ranu has a number of its own APHA approved techniques for bacteriological and chemical analysis, which can be performed, out in the field or in the laboratory under the supervision of an Environmental Chemist. Quality Water Assessment. In assessing the quality of drinking water, the consumer relies principally upon his or her senses. Water constituents may affect the appearance, odour, or taste of the water on the basis of these criteria. Water that is highly turbit is highly coloured or has an objectionable taste or odour may be regarded by consumers as unsafe and may be rejected for drinking. Therefore it is of vital importance that Eda Ranu maintains a water supply that is acceptable to the consumer that meets the standards set for drinking water quality. Many parameters must be taken into consideration in the assessment of water quality such as Source water Protection Treatment efficiency and Reliability Protection of the Distribution Network. Protection Of Source Water Eda Ranu recognises that it is important for the source water entering the treatment plant at Mt Eriama for treatment to be of a good quality and safe for its intended use. This is achieved by putting in place a raw water quality-monitoring program as an integral part of its quality control program. Regular physiochemical and bacteriological tests are done on the source water. The problems of water quality, water quantity and ecosystem health are related to the way we use the resource and manage the associated catchment activities. Eda Ranus long-term vision is to ensure that the source water is protected and managed in a sustainable manner so that our consumers continue receive safe portable water from a highly protected source. Treatment Efficiency The treatment plant is always operational at full capacity. Since the commencement of upgrading works, the volume drinking water treated water supplied to our consumers has increased and treatment efficiency has been consistent at all times within the specified standards. The treatment process and objectives are always met producing a world-class portable water supply to our consumers. Distribution Network. The distribution network that transport water from Mt Eriama Treatment Plant to our consumers is of world class standard. The network has ensured our consumers continue to receive sufficient and uninterrupted good quality water. In many countries the distribution networks are vulnerable to contamination and the bacteriological quality of water can deteriorate during distribution. Here at Eda Ranu we are proud of our record. Since assuming control of the water supply there has been no break down in standards and water quality.
