Text Box: WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM

The system of trunk pipelines conveying water from the clear water storage tanks at Mt Eriama Water Treatment Plant to Port Moresby is basically a gravity system.

Pipe diameters consists of 1400, 1000, 600, 525, 450, 375 and smaller for distribution purposes. In the city water is conveyed to various reservoirs for storage and distribution.

The existing reservoirs are;

Waigani Reservoir (Storage Capacity = 9,000m3)
Hohola Reservoir (Storage Capacity = 9,000m3)
Boroko Reservoir (Storage Capacity = 9,000m3)
3 Mile Reservoir (Storage Capacity = 9,000m3)
Boroko Reservoir (Storage Capacity = 9,000m3)
Koki Reservoir (Storage Capacity = 9,000m3)
Touaguba/Town Reservoir (Storage Capacity = 4,000m3)

A number of reservoirs are not working at the moment mainly due to inadequate trunk pipe delivering water to those reservoirs. Once the upgrading work is complete and the new trunk pipes are installed, water is expected to reach those reservoirs and provide a more convenient and reliable water supply.

The Port Moresby water supply system also consists of smaller pumping systems aimed to deliver water to higher areas. Hydraulically, water conveyed from Mt Eriama Water Treatment Plant (elevation is 160m above mean sea level) by gravity to the city can not reach areas above 80m contour situated towards the ends of the network. Hence, pumping system have been installed to boost pressures to supply these areas. Some of these areas include Paga Hill, Touaguba, Ela Makana and Korobosea.

Whilst the NCD Water and Sewerage Act permits for water to be supplied to NCD residents only, EDA RANU has also assisted by providing some water to the villages located at the fringe of the city boundary. They include Koukou, Porebada, Koderika and Roku villages.

Currently, the system is able to deliver over 170 Mld. However, the city’s water demand is only about 145 Mld.

Water control to settlements is a major problem. The combined volume supplied to villages and settlements is measured at about 40 Mld. The bulk of this water is abused and is not paid for.

EDA RANU has however committed itself to control these unbilled water by introducing the Non-Revenue Water Project. To date a significant amount of water savings has been achieved through this program.
