Text Box: WATER UPGRADING PROJECT

The K160 million water supply upgrading project is nearing completion. The project, which incorporates expansion of the treatment plant to deal with increased city demand, upgrading of trunkmains and distribution mains, refurbishment of  reservoirs and construction of the raw water pipeline, is expected to be completed by June 2006.

Once complete this upgraded infrastructure will be capable of delivering up to 184 Mld (million litres per day) which is sufficient to meet 2020 water demand for Port Moresby. ALL Works are schedule to be complete by June 2006.

Some of the major works under the Upgrading Works program and already constructed include;

Mt Eriama Water Treatment Plant Upgrade

Upgrade to the 3 clarifiers of 136 Mld to 184 Mld capacity
Rehabilitation of existing ‘Boby’ filters
Construction of new 50 Mld filter system and pipe works
Installation of new receiving well
New backwash plant
Extension of existing Admin building with new office and laboratory
Construction Chemical Store


Raw Water Pipeline

Installation of the new 1000mmm diameter raw water main from Rouna 4 Headpond to Mt Eriama Water Treatment Plant
Construction of the new booster pumping station with pumping plant

Trunk pipes
1200mm diameter trunk pipe from 9 Mile to start of JICA line at ERIMA (1.1km)
1000mm diameter trunk pipe from Erima to the back of Parliament building and to Pipit Street Morata (4.85km)
800mm diameter trunk pipe from Pipit Street to back of Morata (1.3km)
600mm diameter trunk pipe from Pipit to Hohola Reservoir (3.95km)
